In Genesis, God knew that Adam would need a partner.  And so He created a woman for him, saying, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18).  Adam, seeing the blessing God had bestowed on him, responded, “For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).  And so marriage began.

Later, the Apostle Paul described this relationship in terms of a covenant—a sacred commitment before God.  What are the marks of this covenant?  To the men, Paul wrote, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).  And to the women, he said, “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything” (Ephesians 5:22-24).  Within this balance of sacrifice and submission, marriages can grow into the earth’s clearest picture of perfect love—the unrelenting, joyful love Jesus pours onto His church.
